Google publishes report on the opportunities of AI in developing regions

Google publishes report on the opportunities of AI in developing regions | Design, Science and Technology | Scoop.it

"The opportunities of AI also extend to developing regions, which is an important consideration ..."

While the potential of generative AI has been discussed extensively over the past year, Google is now looking at AI from a different angle, in regards to how it will benefit developing regions.

As per Google:

“AI stands to benefit people worldwide. This is especially true for developing countries across Latin America, the Middle East, Asia and Africa where it can provide game-changing solutions to unique challenges they face — like poor infrastructure, youth unemployment, uneven access to education and health care, and food insecurity.”

Google Just Acquired Smart Glasses Startup North | #Acquisitions | Design, Science and Technology | Scoop.it

Last Friday, it was reported that Canadian smart glasses startup North was on the verge of being snapped up by Alphabet, Google’s parent company. Today, it’s official.

North announced the acquisition on both Twitter and in an official blog. Details regarding the terms of the sale were scant, though a Globe and Mail scoop from Friday put the number at around $180 million. North’s remaining staff will, however, be staying in Kitchener-Waterloo, Canada and joining a Google team also based there.

Google's New Product Could Be A Stealth Torpedo For LinkedIn - Forbes

Google's New Product Could Be A Stealth Torpedo For LinkedIn - Forbes | Design, Science and Technology | Scoop.it
Google has announced a tool that will let small to medium businesses recruit more quality candidates efficiently. ‘Hire‘ is not to be confused with ‘Google for Jobs’ which Google announced last month which helps people find jobs via search easier. Instead ‘Hire’ works directly with Google’s G Suite (Gmail).

‘Hire’ is a smart play by Google. Not only will the tool get more small businesses using G-suite (a direct competitor to Microsoft’s Office) but it also makes the whole Google product set more alluring to those wavering. LinkedIn looks almost clunky next to Hire and isn’t half as friendly as Google to small and medium sized businesses looking to save time and money. While clearly belonging to Google, small businesses get a sense of ownership they are unlikely to get with LinkedIn.

Hiring only, which makes complete sense for the SMB. I'm thinking this may be a Trojan Horse for something bigger down the road.

Hot Spots: Mapping the World's Most Photographed Locations | Design, Science and Technology | Scoop.it

Sightsmap forms an aggregation of the most photographed buildings by integrating Google's Panoramio, which allows users to tag a location or attraction within their photo.

In a colorful gradient of purples, reds, and yellows, the website reveals the most photographed places around the globe. Broad patches of purple coincide with a lesser amount of photographs, while smaller clusters of yellow reveal the locations where people can't seem to put their cameras down. Unsurprisingly, the densest areas of yellow are the world's most popular tourist spots − including New York City and cities across Europe such as Istanbul.

Sightsmap is more than just a map of tourist destinations however; it also shows the close connection between architecture and what inspires people to take photos. Sightsmap forms an aggregation of the most photographed buildings by integrating Google's Panoramio, which allows users...

Interesting. I'm surprised at the shopping numbers. I thought other sources of data had the % of people shopping online similarly high, but a much smaller % of people actually "buying" online...
janlgordon's comment, November 20, 2011 1:48 PM
Hi Darcy, I agree with you, it is a bit surprising - you would think the percentage was higher - there may be some hidden #'s they're not capturing, It'll definitely be interesting to see how how this looks after the holidays.

Boost Your Website SEO in 4 Ways

There are so many things you could do on your website to get more visitors and traffic. Here are 4 tips to improve your website SEO

Via janlgordon
janlgordon's curator insight, February 22, 2017 6:18 PM

I selected this article from Curatti written by Ashley Faulkes
because it shows you how to boost your website traffic.

Unusual methods that will attract visitors to your landing page.

4 Ways to Increase Website Traffic

In order to get more visitors online you need to have the right strategies in place. I agree that by paying attention to what Google is telling you and discovering any issues with your website can be very helpful.

Faulkes provides unique strategies you can use to improve your traffic.

Here's what caught my attention:

  • Google will let you know what kinds of keywords you are ranking for as well as your page rank. This can help you discover what is working and what is not.

  • Use your main keywords on your homepage. These will show up in Google's search results.

  • Add amazing free images that Google will pick up on. This attracts more readers and visitors, and are very easy to find on places like Unsplash and Pixabay.

Does Website Speed Affect Your Ranking? (infographic)

Does Website Speed Affect Your Ranking? (infographic) | Design, Science and Technology | Scoop.it
Have you ever been to a slow site and it felt like it took hours to load? You look down at your computer clock and really only 30 seconds have gone by. That's just the user experience on a slow site- the real question is “Does your website speed effect your ranking?” Will your slightly slower site be penalized by Google and other search engines when you clients are even looking for you?In this easy to understand graphic, we see that 1 second makes all the difference in the world. And after just 6 short weeks of poor load times, your site can lose 75% of it’s traffic to that page.If you have a low ranking you might want to follow some of the Google Guidelines to pre-load your most popular pages to increase your site’s overall performance.
