All projects • Hackaday Projects | Makerspaces, libraries and education | Scoop.it

Hackaday serves up Fresh Hacks Every Day from around the Internet. Our playful posts are the gold-standard in entertainment for engineers and engineering enthusiasts.

We are taking back the term “Hacking” which has been soured in the public mind. Hacking is an art form that uses something in a way in which it was not originally intended. This highly creative activity can be highly technical, simply clever, or both. Hackers bask in the glory of building it instead of buying it, repairing it rather than trashing it, and raiding their junk bins for new projects every time they can steal a few moments away.

Beyond the Maker Space | Backtalk

Beyond the Maker Space | Backtalk | Makerspaces, libraries and education | Scoop.it
How often do librarians find themselves trying to explain that the library’s mission is not about books but about information? This public misunderstanding about what we are doing and why leads to a community misconception of what we should be doing in the future. The reality is that we as librarians make the same mistake all the time. We know intellectually that informational flow and access are our main missions, but our decisions and our hearts often put the focus on books. Books, in many cases, remain by far the best delivery vehicle for information, but there are many subject areas where other informational vehicles would be more effective, even if implementing those vehicles might mean less money spent on books.
Karen Miller's insight:

Maker culture has expanded the idea of what libraries can do to create and disseminate information.

Today, 3D printing is part of the “Maker Culture” that attempts to encourage people to move from passive users to become producers and in the process enable them to acquire technological skills.

One example of how 3D printing is being used here at VCU is the Virtual Curation Laboratory  which uses 3D technology to record and print historic artifacts for analysis and conservation.
