Learner Agency: The Missing Link

Learner Agency: The Missing Link | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it
First blog in series defining Learner Agency written collaboratively with the Institute of Personalized Learning.
Kathleen McClaskey's insight:

Learner agency often gets missed in conversations on transforming the educational system. We have a sense of ‘agency’ when we feel in control of things that happen around us; when we feel that we can influence events. This is an important sense for learners to develop. Learners must understand:

  • when they need new learning and how to learn what they need
  • when they need to unlearn what will no longer serve them
  • when they need to relearn what they need to be successful

What Learners Think about Agency

What Learners Think about Agency | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it
Final post in Collaborative Blog Series on Learner Agency. The Institute for Personalized Learning asked kids what agency means to them.
Kathleen McClaskey's insight:

The Institute for Personalized Learning asked some middle and high school students from their member districts to reflect on what learner agency means to them and to answer a few questions on the topic.

This brings our collaborative series on learner agency to a close. As we stated in the first blog post, Learner Agency: The Missing Link, “Learner agency often gets missed in conversations on transforming the educational system.” It is clear from the responses that kids have a sense of ‘agency’ when they feel in control of things that happen around them. They want to feel like they can influence events, especially how and what they learn.

Guest Post: 5 Shifts to Learner Roles in a Personalized Learning Environment

Guest Post: 5 Shifts to Learner Roles in a Personalized Learning Environment | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it

Introducing the collaborative blog series on Learner Agency by Personalize Learning, LLC and The Institute for Personalized Learning.

Kathleen McClaskey's insight:

Over the next few months, we will be engaging with the Institute for Personalized Learning in a series of joint posts on Learner Agency. Learner agency often gets left out of conversations on education transformation and even conversations about personalized learning. Yet it is a critical component in any attempt to personalize the learning experience with learners.

To introduce our readers to the Institute, we would like to share a link to one of their previous posts, 5 Shifts to Learner Roles in a Personalized Learning Environment. The post examines several ways in which learners and learning play different and expanded roles in an environment where the goal is to prepare learners for a future in which continuous learning and the ability to learn independently are keys to life and career success.
