The 2002 movie “Minority Report” portrayed a futuristic vision of advertising as the lead character, John Anderton, enters a shopping mall that identifies him from retina scans and pitches personalized ads to him as he walks by: “John Anderton, you could use a Guinness right about now.” That scene influenced a generation of marketers.
I riffed on this premise with a cartoon a few years ago in which John Anderton is publicly subjected to ads for hemorrhoid medication and incontinence pads based on his purchase history (cartoon at the end of this post).
The rise of voice AI and the internet of things opens up another domain of personalized advertising more personal than the mall — the home.
In a weekend, you can build a custom, street-legal motorcycle with nothing but a wrench and some hand tools. Introducing FOSMC: The Fictiv Open Source Motorcycle.
Amazon.com Inc. sold out of its voice-activated Echo speakers, highlighting the difficulty of correctly predicting demand for the holiday shopping season. The $180 Echo is out of stock until Jan. 19 and the $50 Echo Dot won’t be available until after Christmas Day, according to Amazon listings. Both products were heavily discounted recently to compete with the newly released $129 Google Home with similar functions. With the Echo sold out, some people might buy Google’s Home speaker rather than wait for the Amazon devices, said Rob Cheng, head of growth at Elementum, a supply chain software company....
The Internet of Things is not only a land-based phenomenon, but major brands are looking to use hundreds of drones at a time to produce messaging in one form or another. Think interactive, flying billboards. Earlier this month, Intel showed its video of 500 drones flying in formation at night in Germany. The LED lights on the drones spelled out the word ‘Intel.’ That was the first known example of a mass of hundreds of drones being used to portray a company logo in the sky at night. A version of that drone light show is now moving to Walt Disney World in Orlando....
But when it comes to smart devices already owned and desired by shoppers, things that control temperature are more likely to be on the minds of consumers, based on a pair of surveys conducted by Creative Channel Services, a unit of the Omnicom Group, for Twice. One study was a survey of 185 shoppers and the other of an unspecified number of sales associates in multiple retail categories, including big-box national chains, mobile carriers, office supply stores and specialty stores. Sales associates say there is little activity around connected kitchens but lots of interest in home security devices. Here’s what salespeople say is the first smart-home device customers tend to buy: 59% -- Security 42% -- Thermostat/climate control 29% -- Entertainment controls 24% -- Lighting 3% -- Connected kitchen...
The Internet of Things may be coming to a bar near you. In the latest twist in IoT gadgetry, the Absout Company’s Malibu brand is introducing ‘Coco-nect’ cups, which send signals to bar staff when a fresh drink is required. The connected-drinks system uses Wi-Fi and RFID technologies with the coconut-shaped cups. When a fresh drink is desired, the consumer twists the bottom of the cup, which send a drink order to the bar, including the consumer’s location....
Shoppers are warming to beacons and virtual reality.
The majority of consumers are open to location-based technology as long as it improves their shopping experience, according to a new study.
In the no-surprise department, coupons are viewed as the biggest incentive, based on a survey of 1,400 U.S. consumers focused on shopping habits and emerging retail technology conducted by Walker Sands.
While a third (33%) of consumers aren’t open to beacons or any location-based technology in stores, 67% say in-store tracking could improve their in-store shopping experience.
The US smart home market has yet to take off. Quirky's recent announcement that it was filing chapter 11 bankruptcy — and selling off its smart home business, Wink — highlights this well.
At its current state, we believe the smart home market is stuck in the 'chasm' of the technology adoption curve, in which it is struggling to surpass the early-adopter phase and move to the mass-market phase of adoption.
There are many barriers preventing mass-market smart home adoption: high device prices, limited consumer demand and long device replacement cycles. However, the largest barrier is the technological fragmentation of the smart home ecosystem, in which consumers need multiple networking devices, apps and more to build and run their smart home.
The current projection data from Cisco is that the IoT (Internet of Things) will reach 50 Billion devices by the year 2020! Visualized by the NCTA (National Cable & Telecommunications Association) as the Growth in the Internet of Things.
Today’s Internet is driven by wired and wireless networks, keeping us connected throughout our daily lives. With the advent of new digital devices that constantly link us to the Internet, these networks have become much more than just a simple vehicle for information and communications. They now enable us to track our daily habits, monitor our health, manage home energy use and track nearly any other data we can imagine. These devices make up what we call the Internet of Things – a web of connected objects that are linked via networks that can interact with each other and with us.
The Internet isn’t merely developing, it’s exploding, and the numbers prove it. Take a look at our graphic below — it shows the advancing surge of connected devices using the Internet.
Today, there are more connected devices than there are human beings on the planet. This expansion isn’t just from cell phones, tablets and computers – it’s thanks to toothbrushes, stovetops and millions of other devices that now have IP addresses. Estimates show that there will be over 50 billion connected devices by 2020.
Fast, ubiquitous Wi-Fi and increasing home broadband speeds will drive the Internet of Things and the ever-expanding web....

Here are some key points from the report: In total, we project there will be 34 billion devices connected to the internet by 2020, up from 10 billion in 2015. IoT devices will account for 24 billion, while traditional computing devices (e.g. smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, etc.) will comprise 10 billion. Nearly $6 trillion will be spent on IoT solutions over the next five years.Businesses will be the top adopter of IoT solutions. They see three ways the IoT can improve their bottom line by 1) lowering operating costs; 2) increasing productivity; and 3) expanding to new markets or developing new product offerings....
Imagine this: you wake up in the morning and your coffee machine, as it pours you your first cup, tells you it’s almost out of your favourite blend. Rather than making a mental note to yourself to remember to buy some more on your next store visit, your machine instantly does the ordering for you – adding it to your shopping basket, along with the detergent that needs replacing, the toothpaste you’re running low on, and the mascara that is just about to dry out.
When you leave for work, you get an update that the order will be delivered to the trunk of your car that afternoon. You then get a notification that it’s your friend’s birthday, and based on social media data that your digital assistant has pulled, you are recommended an ideal present to buy. You automatically add that to the checkout also.
Welcome to the age of programmatic commerce: a world where mundane repeat purchases and those easily solved by data insights, are automatically done for you....
The IoT, or Internet of Things, is burgeoning. While the better known internet is made up of humans communicating with one another, the IoT all but eliminates the human element. Essentially, once it’s all set up, the machines communicate with one another. An IoT in your home, in your city, or at your workplace is actually extremely useful.
In practice, an IoT can automate a lot of tasks and processes. It can make life easier, safer, and much more convenient. There’s currently a whole lot of capital moving around the IoT tech sector, over 800 companies are working on IoT devices and platforms, and new IoT components come on the market on a regular basis
The infographic included here gives you a good visual summary of what’s happening. We made it to show you what types of technology IoT companies are focusing on, how the money is flowing, where the innovation is taking place, and more....

Mike Frane, VP of product management at Windstream, told dozens of tech-industry watchers at Boston's recent MassIntelligence Conference that "the retail industry is going to be least likely to adopt AI." But Frane sandwiched this remark between compelling monologues on the bandwidth woes of traditional brick-and-mortar businesses.
"What we're seeing in the enterprise world is that the bandwidth requirements are doubling every 18 months," Frane said in his breakout session. The conundrum is further exacerbated, reported Frane, by trends and demands of the Internet of Things – a key enabling technology of AI systems – and the "tremendous amount of information" that the IoT will gather and generate....
While most folks are ditching their landlines because they now have a phone with them wherever they go, they might make a comeback as a feature in voice assistant speakers, reports The Wall Street Journal. According to the WSJ’s sources, Google and Amazon are considering adding the ability to make and receive voice calls to the companies’ Home and Echo devices respectively. They’re currently equipped to handle tasks like controlling your lights and smart appliances, streaming music and ordering groceries online. Enabling voice calls would certainly make those voice-activated speakers a lot more useful, and give you another reason to stop carrying your smartphone around the house all the time. Of course, the big question is, how will calls work? Google already has a bunch of products like Hangouts and Voice for handling voice communication, and syncs your contacts’ numbers across its apps. It also has Duo for video calls and the company said last August that it planned to add support for voice-only chats....
Don’t expect to see too many wearable devices like Apple Watches and Fitbits under Christmas trees this year—they’re not on many wish lists.eMarketer has significantly revised its estimates of wearable-device users in the US. The still-young category showed early promise, but usage has not expanded beyond early adopters. In October 2015, eMarketer expected usage among US adults to grow more than 60% this year. But according to its latest forecast, it will only grow 24.7%, as smart watches in particular have failed to impress consumers. This year, 39.5 million US adults will use a wearable device (with internet connectivity) at least once a month, far less than the 63.7 million previously forecast. Smart watches haven’t caught on in large numbers, primarily because of their high price point and lack of definitive use case. This year, usage of wearables will reach just 15.8% of the population. That penetration rate is only expected to grow to 21.1% by 2020....
REVIEWING A PRODUCT designed to learn over time is like reviewing a newborn baby. So much functionality is dependent on artificial intelligence and machine learning, the only certainty is that it’ll get smarter over time. Who knows what it’ll end up being: A jack-of-all-trades? A specialized savant? Or maybe just a creeper that records everything you say? Consider the Amazon Echo. At birth, it didn’t have the ability to order you Domino’s, play Spotify playlists, or get things from Amazon Prime. In the past year, its capabilities and intelligence have evolved significantly. That’s thanks to hundreds of “skills” created by developers with the Alexa Skills Kit, partnerships with major companies such as Uber and Sonos, and Amazon’s new Music Unlimited service, which offers deep voice-control features. At the ripe old age of two, Amazon’s Echo already has offspring in the form of the Echo Dot and Echo Tap. And now it has a neonate arch-rival in the form of Google Home. In the long term, the competition between the two platforms will be great for users of both devices: Two heavyweights in the tech world will be trying to make their voice assistants smarter, more versatile, and more useful than the other one. As of now, they’re more like twins than not: They both tell decent jokes, they both stream NPR if you ask for news, they both do IFTTT, and they spout recipes and random facts with ease. Because it’s had more time in the world, Amazon’s platform has the advantage in many key areas. But Google Home ($130) trumps the full-size Echo ($180) in a few ways too—and not just in terms of price. They’re both really good, and they’re both going to get smarter. A lot smarter....
The future landscape of the Internet of Things will be largely occupied by virtual reality and augmented reality products and services. With new entrants on the consumer hardware side like Sony’s just-released PlayStation VR, which is expected to sell millions of units by the end of the year, the VR and AR markets are growing. The VR and AR market is forecast to grow by almost 30 times its size after 2020, according to a new study from Citi’s Global Perspectives and Solutions group. In the next four years, the AR and VR market is forecast to grow to $80 billion. However, the market will grow to $2.16 trillion by 2035, according to Citi. Another recent study by Machina Research forecasts the entire IoT market to reach $3 trillion by 2025. Almost half ($1.3 trillion) of that revenue will come directly from end-users paying for products and services, according to that study....
While a lot of behavioral change will come with the Internet of Things, some people are attempting to cause a bit of that change right away.In a push to help shoppers save money, a company has created a programmable handbag with built-in robotics that causes the bag to vibrate, flash and self-lock when the shopper enters a ‘danger spending zone.’ The iBag2 (yes, there was an earlier version, which launched in Australia a while back), is the brainchild of the personal finance website finder.com in the U.K. The rather high-tech bag was designed by a New York fashion designer and a team of engineers crafted the robotics features....
Nearly 250 years later, in a world defined by technological change, we see the same fears and concerns. As of September 2015, Amazon had 30,000 Kiva robots automating its warehouses, increasing efficiency and reducing the need for pick-and-pack labor. And at the same time, demand for software developers continues to rise, as Marc Andreessen’s famous 2011 statement that “software is eating the world” becomes ever more true.
Over the next decade, we’ll see this pattern play out once more in the nascent Internet of Things (IoT). With an industry defined by “bringing physical things online,” many IoT business models are predicated on improving efficiency by eliminating labor. We see companies connecting garbage cans to the internet to improve the efficiency of deploying waste collectors — which means we’ll need fewer waste collectors. Drones are dramatically reducing the time it takes to survey a plot of land — which means we’ll need fewer surveyors. Every industry that involves electronics or equipment can expect to be disrupted in this way over the next 10 years.
So the same question that was asked in the late 1700s remains: Will this new technology eliminate jobs? No....
While many companies, big and small, have been jumping into the wearables space in recent years, the use-cases for these devices often feels superficial — with fitness perhaps the most compelling scenario at this nascent stage. Yet smartwatches have far richer potential than merely performing a spot of sweat tracking.
The other problem with the current crop of smartwatches is the experience of using apps on wrist-mounted devices does not always live up to the promise of getting stuff done faster or more efficiently. Just having to load an app on this type of supplementary device can feel like an imposition.
If the primary selling point of a smartwatch is really convenience/glanceability the watch wearer really does not want to have to be squinting at lots of tiny icons and manually loading data to get the function they need in a given moment. A wearable needs to be a whole lot smarter to make it worth the wearing vs just using a smartphone.
At the same time, other connected devices populating the growing Internet of Things can feel pretty dumb right now — given the interface demands they also place on users. Such as, for example, connected lightbulbs like Philips Hue that require the user to open an app on their phone just in order to turn a lightbulb on or off, or change the colour of the light.
Which is pretty much the opposite of convenient, and why we’ve already seen startups trying to fix the problems IoT devices are creating via sensor-powered automation....
Gartner Research predicts that the typical family home will contain as many as 500 networked devices by 2020. Similarly, Ericsson forecasts 50 billion connected “things” by the same date. Reaching these lofty projections over the next four years, however, will require a fundamental reorientation in the way that technologists and product designers work together to create successful “connected” personal devices and home appliance products. This evolution to “Internet of Things (IoT) 2.0” will be difficult for many companies to achieve — not for lack of technological expertise but because they’ll fail to recognize the value of design in connected product development.
Machine-to-machine (M2M) connectivity — the forerunner of consumer-focused IoT — has been around for decades. Overwhelmingly, those IoT 1.0 applications pushed technology to address B2B market requirements.
Product design considerations in the IoT 1.0 world are not critical to persuading customers to adopt offerings. Enterprise IoT buyers seldom require great design, because most often the buyer is not the product’s end user. Fleet logistics companies, for example, monitor the condition and location of their vehicles. Their developers focus on meeting operational and environmental requirements, caring little about the physical appearance or user experience of a dashboard- or engine-compartment-mounted device that monitors vehicle data....
For years now, we've been hearing about how the Internet of Things will connect every object in our homes. And for years, the vast majority of those objects stay dumb.
"What companies are struggling with when it comes to the broad label of the IoT on the consumer side is what the actual problem trying to be solved is," says Rob Chandhouk, president of the sensor startup Helium. "Look at Samsung's new smart fridge, which they're marketing as the hub for your home. Do you think of your refrigerator as a hub?"
Chandhouk doesn't believe that the IoT will be making any big breakthroughs with consumers any time soon. Instead, Helium is betting big IoT's real utility is on the commercial and industrial side of things. It looks like numerous big players agree, based on a recent $20 million Series B funding round including Alphabet's investment arm GV, previously known as Google Ventures. But it's another investor in the latest round that gives us our clearest hint of where IoT is going: Munich Re, an insurance and risk management company....
From a purely technical perspective, adding mobile payment hardware (NFC) to a device is easy, which is why major tech companies have been doing it since 2007.
The challenge, however, was creating safe services, at scale, that could make payments as digital as the people who will use them.
MasterCard has answered the call through with a variety of mobile payment innovations, from its digital wallet service MasterPass, to contactless technologies that make transactions faster, to commerce platforms like Android PayTM, Apple PayTM and Samsung Pay, even advanced tokenization services.
The future of payments doesn't just live on a smartphone, though....
In 2016, the same rule applies. Change is the only real constant in tech.In the next 13 months or so, brace yourself for tech servings you probably never thought would exist so early in the 21st century. The ingredients will come from a spicy delicacy of variety, in the multifaceted form of Internet of Things (IoT), wearable and fashionable wearables, mind-boggling networking capabilities, heart rate monitors, and virtual reality ingenuity, just to mention a few appetisers.
Already, our sources can confirm a couple of these phenomena and, for your curious pleasure, here are 36 exciting, maybe outlandish, audacious tech bites to look forward to in 2016. 2015 brought some of these, but 2016 seems to be the year they are put to real use by real users so buckle up.
This list brings you ten disruptive technologies from companies you probably never heard of, but their products are guaranteed to make you want to time travel to 2016 when the products are made available to consumers....
