“Wide-faced men are going to lie and cheat” | Science News | Scoop.it

We’ve read about aggressive men with thick necks and wide faces. We often suspect them of being violent thugs. Some, more charitably, might opine they are simply more confident and assertive. Or maybe weight-lifters. New research says they are also likely liars and cheaters. Seriously?

Unhappiness Is in the Eye of the Beholder

Unhappiness Is in the Eye of the Beholder | Science News | Scoop.it

A smile and a frown mean the same thing everywhere—or so say many anthropologists and evolutionary psychologists, who for more than a century have argued that all humans express basic emotions the same way. But a new study of people's perceptions of computer-generated faces suggests that facial expressions may not be universal and that our culture strongly shapes the way we read and express emotions.

[VIDEO] Making Faces for Survival

Ask any person, from any country‚ to make a fearful face and you'll get the same response-eyebrows raised, eyes wide open, flared nostrils. A disgusted face, on the other hand, shows brows furrowed, eyes narrowed, and a tight mouth. The universal nature of certain facial expressions like fear, disgust, and sadness has led evolutionary scientists to wonder if facial expressions play a more fundamental biological role than just conveying emotion.

About Face: How the Brain Recognizes and Processes Faces | Science News | Scoop.it

To most of us, pigeons all look the same, but human faces do not, despite also being similar to each other in appearance. Brain scientists are now developing a thorough understanding of the specialized circuits that distinguish faces. In the process, they have discovered the inability to recognize familiar faces, called prosopagnosia, may be far more common than once thought.

Face.com (Wildly) Guesses Your Age and Mood From Your Photo

Face.com (Wildly) Guesses Your Age and Mood From Your Photo | Science News | Scoop.it

The next creepy step in facial recognition comes from Face.com--a little bit of software that purports to not only identify you with a photo of your face, but also deduce your age, gender, and mood. We'd be more creeped out if it wasn't sort of...not accurate. The above photo of Pop Photo's Dan Bracaglia, a 24-year-old who we'd describe as "smiling sardonically," was identified as a non-smiling 33-year-old man in a "happy" mood.
