The future of e-cigarette

There can be some confusion about vapes (sometimes called e-cigarettes or e-cigs). This is not surprising, because there is lots of misleading information out there. Here are some of the most common myths about vaping, and the facts based on scientific evidence and data.

Among lifetime tobacco users, higher levels of parental education were associated with co-use of cannabis and e-cigarettes. Racial/ethnic-specific patterns of e-cigarette and cannabis co-use depends on adolescents’ prior experience with tobacco. The higher rates of use and co-use of e-cigarettes and cannabis among prior tobacco users suggest that targeted interventions are needed for this group. Identified socio-demographic groups at higher risk of co-use of e-cigarettes and cannabis need to be further studied.

The moment that festival fans have been waiting for is almost finally here, with Glastonbury Festival finally kicking off in less than two weeks. More than 200,000 attendees will flock to the festival to see the likes of the Arctic Monkeys, Lizzo and Elton John. However, festivalgoers will be advised not to take disposable e-cigarettes this year, as part of Glastonbury's efforts to 'reduce, reuse and recycle' plastics. The festival has updated its packing guidelines on the website, which now say 'not to bring' disposable vapes.

New Zealand will ban disposable vapes in a radical crackdown on its own kid e-cig epidemic. Child-friendly flavours, such as 'cotton candy' and 'strawberry jelly donut', will also be forbidden in favour of duller titles. The drastic changes — set to be phased in from August — follow an unprecedented law preventing kids born after 2009 from ever being able to buy cigarettes. New Zealand's Health Minister Dr Ayesha Verrall said: 'We want vapes as far from the minds and reach of children and young people as possible.'

The marketing of e-cigarette and vaping products to younger cohorts has raised fears that the tobacco industry is attempting to “create a new generation of nicotine-addicted young people,” according to a consultant.

Researchers from the University of Oxford examined 78 studies, including 40 randomised controlled trials, which involved 22 052 adults who smoked to assess the effectiveness, tolerability, and safety of e-cigarettes to help quitting. They found that quit rates among adults using nicotine e-cigarettes were higher than those receiving nicotine replacement therapy (risk ratio 1.63, 95% confidence interval 1.30 to 2.04; I2=10%; six studies, 2378 participants). This could translate to an additional 4 quitters per 100 (95% CI 2 to 6), the researchers said.

Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are handheld devices that work by heating a liquid that usually contains nicotine and flavourings. E-cigarettes allow you to inhale nicotine in a vapour rather than smoke. Because they do not burn tobacco, e-cigarettes do not expose users to the same levels of chemicals that can cause diseases in people who smoke conventional cigarettes.

Innokin says water-based vaping was developed to deliver smoother vapour, faster satisfaction and more accurate flavours, while enhancing the potential for harm reduction. These benefits are achieved using a proprietary e-liquid formulation with 30% water content and new vaping hardware tailored to thinner liquids. Independent testing by TCT Lab has demonstrated that water-based vaping reduces acetaldehyde and formaldehyde emissions by 91% and 81% respectively compared to traditional vapes.

If you’re worried about lung cancer, then smoking is incredibly dangerous. The chance of a non-smoker developing the disease is roughly one in 6,000. For someone who smokes regularly, the chances skyrocket to one in five or ten. And yet, most people who smoke won’t develop lung cancer.

“While RTBA Malaysia understands the Health Ministry’s (MOH) motive, the proposed ban on cigarettes and vape for the next generation is 100% theory and 0% evidence,” claimed RTBA Malaysia managing director Datuk Fazli Nordin. “Banning is not a solution.”

Our findings are consistent with the idea that substituting tobacco cigarettes with e-cigarettes may substantially reduce exposure to selected tobacco-specific toxicants. These days, there are many alternatives to cigarettes on the market. Cigalikes, vape pens, vape mods, pod mods, tanks, and more—each of these devices suits a specific purpose and lifestyle.
One of the main distinctions between types of vapes is whether they are rechargeable or disposable. Vapes of all kinds require some voltage to operate. The tiny machinery inside needs power to combust the e-liquid and produce vapor.

Compared to smoking traditional cigarettes, the harm associated with ENDS use may be underestimated due to the reduced ability to control vaping behavior, ease of ENDS access, fewer vaping area restrictions, and better taste. Currently, the available evidence suggests that ENDS may be a safer alternative to traditional tobacco products. Though most oral symptoms experienced by ENDS users are relatively mild and temporary compared to traditional cigarettes, the dangers of ENDS still exist. However, further research with longer follow-up periods is required to establish the long-term safety of ENDS.

Moves by regulators to limit the nicotine content of cigarettes would encourage people to buy full-nicotine cigarettes from illegal sources, according to a new study by researchers at Johns Hopkins University. But the availability of affordable vape products, the paper also suggests, would curb that migration to the illicit market.

Imperial’s response follows the call by the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID) for evidence to “identify opportunities to reduce the number of children (people aged under 18) accessing and using vape products, while ensuring they are still easily available as a quit aid for adult smokers.”

Underlying mechanisms of e-cig-induced vascular endothelial dysfunction are delineated. e-cig exposure activates and increases expression of NADPH oxidase and disrupts activation and coupling of eNOS, leading to a vicious cycle of superoxide generation and peroxynitrite formation, with tetrahydrobiopterin depletion, causing loss of NO that triggers vascular endothelial dysfunction. This process is progressive, increasing with the duration of e-cig exposure, and is more severe in the presence of nicotine, but observed even with nicotine-free vaping.

The present study establishes inhaled models of cigarette and e-cigarette use with normalized nicotine delivery, then characterizes the impact on blood-brain barrier (BBB) function. Sequencing of microvessel RNA following exposure revealed downregulation of several genes with critical roles in BBB function. Reduced protein expression of Occludin and Glut1 is also observed at the tight junction in all groups following exposure. Pro-inflammatory changes in leukocyte-endothelial cell interaction are also noted, and mice exposed to nicotine-free e-cigarettes have impaired novel object recognition performance.

Both waterpipe and ECIGs deliver the dependence-producing drug nicotine. Waterpipe tobacco smoking has been associated with periodontitis, dry socket, premalignant lesions, and oral and esophageal cancer. The health effects of long-term ECIG use are unknown.

Invités à identifier les principaux freins à une transition vers ce type de produit, les fumeurs citent avant tout leur préférence pour le goût de la cigarette classique (1ère raison citée par 30% d’entre eux), puis le sentiment que ce produit n’est pas forcément moins nocif pour la santé (20%) ou encore qu’il coûte trop cher (17%).

At first glance, the study seems to undermine the case for e-cigarette use (“vaping”) as a smoking cessation tool. But first glances, as we all know, rarely tell the whole story. A closer look at the paper indicates that its authors improperly assessed how smokers utilize e-cigarettes, thus generating results that don't reflect reality.

Under the amended Smokefree Environments and Regulated Products Act, all retailers, manufacturers and importers are only allowed to sell notified vaping and smokeless tobacco products that have been registered with the Health Advisory and Regulatory Platform. All products must comply with the relevant product safety requirements before they can be notified, and notifications must be renewed every 12 months, or they will expire.

Nicotine inhaling products containing more than 2% nicotine, or with more than 2ml of liquid, are illegal to sell as they do not comply with UK safety requirements. However, illegal products with up to 5% nicotine have been found on sale locally. There are also serious concerns that underage children are accessing these products.
