Socio-demographic Correlates of Electronic Cigarette and Cannabis Co-use Among Naïve and Tobacco Adolescent Users

Socio-demographic Correlates of Electronic Cigarette and Cannabis Co-use Among Naïve and Tobacco Adolescent Users | The future of e-cigarette | Scoop.it

Among lifetime tobacco users, higher levels of parental education were associated with co-use of cannabis and e-cigarettes. Racial/ethnic-specific patterns of e-cigarette and cannabis co-use depends on adolescents’ prior experience with tobacco. The higher rates of use and co-use of e-cigarettes and cannabis among prior tobacco users suggest that targeted interventions are needed for this group. Identified socio-demographic groups at higher risk of co-use of e-cigarettes and cannabis need to be further studied.

New Zealand BANS disposable vapes

New Zealand BANS disposable vapes | The future of e-cigarette | Scoop.it

New Zealand will ban disposable vapes in a radical crackdown on its own kid e-cig epidemic. Child-friendly flavours, such as 'cotton candy' and 'strawberry jelly donut', will also be forbidden in favour of duller titles. The drastic changes — set to be phased in from August — follow an unprecedented law preventing kids born after 2009 from ever being able to buy cigarettes. New Zealand's Health Minister Dr Ayesha Verrall said: 'We want vapes as far from the minds and reach of children and young people as possible.'

Vaping helps adults quit smoking better than traditional methods

Vaping helps adults quit smoking better than traditional methods | The future of e-cigarette | Scoop.it

Researchers from the University of Oxford examined 78 studies, including 40 randomised controlled trials, which involved 22 052 adults who smoked to assess the effectiveness, tolerability, and safety of e-cigarettes to help quitting. They found that quit rates among adults using nicotine e-cigarettes were higher than those receiving nicotine replacement therapy (risk ratio 1.63, 95% confidence interval 1.30 to 2.04; I2=10%; six studies, 2378 participants). This could translate to an additional 4 quitters per 100 (95% CI 2 to 6), the researchers said.

Can electronic cigarettes help people stop smoking, and do they have any unwanted effects when used for this purpose? | The future of e-cigarette | Scoop.it

Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are handheld devices that work by heating a liquid that usually contains nicotine and flavourings. E-cigarettes allow you to inhale nicotine in a vapour rather than smoke. Because they do not burn tobacco, e-cigarettes do not expose users to the same levels of chemicals that can cause diseases in people who smoke conventional cigarettes.

Water-Based Vaping Breakthrough Unveiled At UKVIA Forum | The future of e-cigarette | Scoop.it

Innokin says water-based vaping was developed to deliver smoother vapour, faster satisfaction and more accurate flavours, while enhancing the potential for harm reduction. These benefits are achieved using a proprietary e-liquid formulation with 30% water content and new vaping hardware tailored to thinner liquids. Independent testing by TCT Lab has demonstrated that water-based vaping reduces acetaldehyde and formaldehyde emissions by 91% and 81% respectively compared to traditional vapes.

A breakthrough in DNA sequencing hints at why most smokers don't get lung cancer | The future of e-cigarette | Scoop.it

If you’re worried about lung cancer, then smoking is incredibly dangerous. The chance of a non-smoker developing the disease is roughly one in 6,000. For someone who smokes regularly, the chances skyrocket to one in five or ten. And yet, most people who smoke won’t develop lung cancer.

The risk profile of electronic nicotine delivery systems, compared to traditional cigarettes, on oral disease

The risk profile of electronic nicotine delivery systems, compared to traditional cigarettes, on oral disease | The future of e-cigarette | Scoop.it

Compared to smoking traditional cigarettes, the harm associated with ENDS use may be underestimated due to the reduced ability to control vaping behavior, ease of ENDS access, fewer vaping area restrictions, and better taste. Currently, the available evidence suggests that ENDS may be a safer alternative to traditional tobacco products. Though most oral symptoms experienced by ENDS users are relatively mild and temporary compared to traditional cigarettes, the dangers of ENDS still exist. However, further research with longer follow-up periods is required to establish the long-term safety of ENDS.

Electronic cigarette exposure causes vascular endothelial dysfunction due to NADPH oxidase activation and eNOS uncoupling

Electronic cigarette exposure causes vascular endothelial dysfunction due to NADPH oxidase activation and eNOS uncoupling | The future of e-cigarette | Scoop.it

Underlying mechanisms of e-cig-induced vascular endothelial dysfunction are delineated. e-cig exposure activates and increases expression of NADPH oxidase and disrupts activation and coupling of eNOS, leading to a vicious cycle of superoxide generation and peroxynitrite formation, with tetrahydrobiopterin depletion, causing loss of NO that triggers vascular endothelial dysfunction. This process is progressive, increasing with the duration of e-cig exposure, and is more severe in the presence of nicotine, but observed even with nicotine-free vaping.

Electronic cigarette exposure disrupts blood-brain barrier integrity and promotes neuroinflammation

Electronic cigarette exposure disrupts blood-brain barrier integrity and promotes neuroinflammation | The future of e-cigarette | Scoop.it

The present study establishes inhaled models of cigarette and e-cigarette use with normalized nicotine delivery, then characterizes the impact on blood-brain barrier (BBB) function. Sequencing of microvessel RNA following exposure revealed downregulation of several genes with critical roles in BBB function. Reduced protein expression of Occludin and Glut1 is also observed at the tight junction in all groups following exposure. Pro-inflammatory changes in leukocyte-endothelial cell interaction are also noted, and mice exposed to nicotine-free e-cigarettes have impaired novel object recognition performance.

Electronic Cigarette Solvents, JUUL E-Liquids, and Biomarkers of Exposure: In Vivo Evidence for Acrolein and Glycidol in E-Cig-Derived Aerosols

Electronic Cigarette Solvents, JUUL E-Liquids, and Biomarkers of Exposure: In Vivo Evidence for Acrolein and Glycidol in E-Cig-Derived Aerosols | The future of e-cigarette | Scoop.it

Despite the increasing popularity of e-cigarettes, their long-term health effects remain unknown. In animal models, exposure to e-cigarette has been reported to result in pulmonary and cardiovascular injury, and in humans, the acute use of e-cigarettes increases heart rate and blood pressure and induces endothelial dysfunction. In both animal models and humans, cardiovascular dysfunction associated with e-cigarettes has been linked to reactive aldehydes such as formaldehyde and acrolein generated in e-cigarette aerosols. These aldehydes are known products of heating and degradation of vegetable glycerin (VG) present in e-liquids.
